In 1919 a handful
of enthusiasts incorporated a Country Club, and one year later E.A.
(Ted) Thomas, just back from the First World War, blasted off from number one
tee north of the present layout, and golfers pushed off over the five-hole
course…
Mr. Ted Thomas,
Engineer, designed the first course that was built under the supervision of Mr.
Harry Mealey, Golf Professional and Course Superintendent
June 1930,
according to the Times Globe…”the club will be enlarging its property and
contemplating improvements that will make the course and its equipment much more
attractive. This course is on its way to being the most popular in the province.”
The
Westfield Golf and Country club leased “the old Crawford” farm and
contracted Mr. Donald Ross to lay out a nine hole course which was completed in
1931 under the supervision of a Mr. Hatch, who was an assistant to Donald Ross.
Mr. Ross is famous for designing many courses in North and South Carolina and
for bringing the #2 Pinehurst course up to it’s present legendary status. He
also designed Oak Hill in Rochester, NY, the site of the 2003 PGA Championship.
The
nine holes that Mr. Ross designed are…
# 1-505 yards par
5...the approach to the green has been modified
# 2-214 yards par 3
# 3-300 yards par
4…the original green is behind the 1st green and is only used for temporary
play.
# 4-418 yards par
4…the water hazard is new
# 8-350 yards par 4
# 9-380 yards par 4
#10-318 yards par
4…. trees added 1984…. one bunker removed
#17-317 yards par
4…. 1 bunker removed…2 bunkers installed
#18-184 yards par
3…1 bunker removed behind green 1969

1950 - Work begins
on three new holes, completed and playable in 1951. The new holes are the
existing #5, #6 and #7. Number 7 was a 165 yard par 3 . The hole was
extended in the early sixties.
These 12 holes were
played as follows with the existing number of the hole in brackets.
1---2---3---4---5(8)---6(9)---7(10)-8(17)---9(7)---10(5)---11(6)---12(18).
Holes 1-2-3-4-5(8)
+ 6(9) were replayed to complete an 18 hole round.
On July 1st 1959
six new holes were opened.

#11- The 11th hole,
a par four, runs 341 yards up hill most of the way. The green is not
#12-The fairway
runs at right angle to the 11th and is a 120 yd par three.
#13-The par five
13th hole is at present 100 yards short of its eventual distance. It has a
dog leg
# 1-The front of the green was modified to improve drainage
# 3-Abandoned the old and built new adding yardage
# 4-Large pond on left side.
# 5-Flat green changed to the present two-tier, fairway bunkers, left and right.
# 6-Green modified to improve drainage, trees planted to the left of green
# 7-Changed from a par 3 to the present par 4. Pond enlarged.
#10-Trees planted between #17 and #10, 1984. Large bunker removed after trees
reached maturity.
#11-Two tees built to replace original.
#12-Teeing area modified to improve visibility.
#13-Built present green as a replacement and added approximately 30 yards.
#14-Original tee box removed from play due for safety reasons. Par changes from
5 to 4.
#15-Topmost bunker right of the green removed. Lower bunker left side of green
modified to
prevent washout.
#16-Ladies tee moved back to make a Par 5.
#17-An elongated bunker in front of the green was removed.
#18-The tee box has been modified recently. An original bunker on the back
side of the green
was removed, 1969.
Several tee boxes
have been improved or replaced over the years. There have been minor
changes to aid in course maintenance.
