A

S this year’s golf season comes to a close we would like to thank all staff members for providing great dining experience  and fabulous course on which to play. Many thanks to Susan in her thousand jobs. Thanks also to Marshall McMahon and his staff. We look forward to Marshall becoming an integral part of the Westfield management team as he takes on the role of Golf Services Manager in 2007.

Many thanks to the committees and  individuals who donate their time to help members experience variety at Westfield from invitationals to in house tournaments to friendly wagers.

Enjoy this beautiful fall season and don’t forget the Annual Meeting, October 21st at 10:00am and the Closing Dinner on the 27th.

On a personal note I would like to thank Board members who have worked many hours to keep us on a strong financial footing as well as continue to enhance the course using the design plan and strategic plan.

Thanks to John Price, chair of Professional Services Committee; Merrill Loughery, Chair of Greens Committee; Joan Hurst, Membership Committee and anything else asked of her; Sean Cashin, pond and maintenance building; Terry Robart, Secretary; Karen Holyoke, Treasurer; Steve Evans and Noel Wittrien, who served willingly the last months and to Jamie Bastrache and Heather Shuve who left us early but their passion and concerns for Westfield continues as they persue other interests.

MANAGER’S NOTES by Noel Wittrien

A

s we approach the end of another golfing season members are reminded of the Annual Meeting scheduled for October 21st  at 10:00 am. The main item on the meeting’s tentative agenda is the election of a new Board of Directors for next year.

Although Thanksgiving is not quite here many of us are looking forward to Christmas. Don’t forget our Christmas dinners that will be held on December 7th and 8th this year. Also, Lynn and Nancy are taking orders for their famous Meat Pies. To order these treats call Nancy at 757-8308 or Lynn at 727-8814.

Please note that effective Tuesday, October 10th  the dining room will be open from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm only. As in past years soup and sandwiches will be available. The hours of operation are an attempt to continue to provide service to members during the later part of October while controlling costs.

GREENS COMMITTEE by Merrill Loughery

W

ell another summer has come and gone and this year the weather was very co-operative allowing us to give you some of the best conditions we have
seen on our course in many years.

The new tee on Number Eleven is taking shape and will be completed very shortly.  We will then turn some of our attention to our cart paths.  We have been making a concerted effort to do our spraying when people are not on the course.  While on the subject of spraying, our new machine is doing a much better job while completing the task much more economically.

With the coming of winter and the possible digging of the pond, there will be some disruptions. If we begin work on the pond, it will be necessary to close part of the course for approximately three weeks due to the traffic of the machinery.  Another disruption will be the aerating of the greens and
the application of profile in preparation for the winter tarps of which we will be adding an additional pair.

Once again, I am asking for assistance in covering the greens.  If you can offer any help in this area, please sign one of the sheets around the club.

As this could be my last newsletter, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Paul and his crew for the fantastic job they have done in providing all of us with perhaps the best course in the Maritimes this year.  To the members of the Green's Committee, Sonja Taylor, Marshall McMahon, Mike
Graham and Bob Plume, thank you for
the many hours you have donated. Have a great winter and we will hopefully see all of you in the spring.

LADIES
ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Submitted by Gay Wittrien

A

s President of the Ladies Association of the Westfield Golf and Country Club, I submit the following report. This report is going to be all about you........

First, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Executive Table Officers: Cindy Hutchinson, Sonja Taylor, Pat Loughery and Margaret Coulpier for their support and advice. The members of the Executive Committee Donna Holland, Joan Hurst, Sarah Wilson, Nicole Haynes, Sandra Franey and Debbie Ketch worked to ensure that we all had a great golfing experience this past year. You did a super job!

It is important to note the extra golfing tasks our ladies assumed. Judy Carpenter organized the Diana Brennan Tournament. Joan Hurst chaired the Tim Horton’s Westfield Tournament and our Helen Kerr organized both of the Westfield Mixed Tournaments. As well, everyone had fun at the Super Six organized by Joan Leggett.

Part way through the year our members welcomed Elaine Elkin as the new assistant Match Captain and we thank Joan Hurst for her input this past year and a half!

The proceeds from a Tournament sponsored by Scott Armstrong and organized by Pat Loughery, Sonja Taylor and Jane Craig were forwarded to the Canadian Cancer Society. This was a first for Westfield and we look forward to this tournament next year!

The Tuesday Evening Ladies were very receptive to Nancy Steele and Karen Walsh coming forward during the year to help organize a few fun nights on the course including “Evening Scramble” and “Bring a Guest”.

I am going to take a moment to thank a special member, one who spends a lot of time at the club organizing golfing games and  tournaments, submitting  golfing results to the newspapers, and ensuring that we are  playing by the rules.  Never to busy to help out, Donna Holland has done an amazing job doing all this and more. We applaud her commitment! After five years as Match Captain, Donna has decided that it is time for someone new to take the reins. Please join with me in extending a huge thank you to Donna for a job well done.

From all reports the Niner’s had a banner year! Sarah Wilson and Nicole Haynes organized a number of activities and they made sure the members had lots of opportunities to learn and at the same time have a fun experience.  Their Invitational held at Westfield was a huge success and due in part to the creativity of the organizers.  Westfield has bee fortunate to have had Sarah and Nicole these two past golfing seasons. Thank you for all your work!

I know a number of golfers this past season have broken 100 for the first time and to you, I say congratulations!

The spring also saw Helen Kerr and Sonja Taylor putting their special touches to work around the golf course. Many hours of planning and many more hours on their hands and knees working in the garden beds resulted in many compliments from members and guests. We have all noticed the impact of colour on the 2nd hole! I understand they have some new plans for next year and we are all looking forward to next season.

Judy Comeau was extra busy this past year serving as President of the Westfield Golf and Country Club and Joan Hurst took on a number of responsibilities as a Club Director.

The season=s opening Tea & Fashion Show was held on May 12th.The new styles from Sandra=s were introduced by our wonderful Westfield models. We all know there is a lot of planning and work involved with this event. I wish to thank Jane Craig and Wendy Lourie and their committee who helped ensure another successful day.  Sue Mullaly=s Decor 8 table decorations were also applauded by our members.

The Tuesday Ladies Luncheons held twice a month from May through September were well attended. I wish to thank the convenors of the luncheons as well as Lynn and her staff who always provided excellent meals for the ladies.  Everyone was saddened this past year with the passing of Linda. Her friendliness will always be remembered.

Our Cindy Hutchinson, Debbie McHugh, Maureen O=Neill and Helen McCullum did us proud representing our Club at the Provincials held in the Miramichi in July. Well done ladies!

The changes to the golf course went smoothly and everyone remarked how good the course looked this year. Paul and his staff are to be commended for their never ending work.

The office and pro shop staff were always there for us. Thanks to them for the free tips!

Finally, you have all made my term as your President a pleasant experience and I thank you. Most of all, I am grateful for all the friendships I’ve made and strengthened throughout my term.

It has been a busy year and now I say to you, stay well and if I don=t see you on the course, I will see you in the spring!

Super Seniors

by Harvey Miller

T

he last half of the year has given us some of the best weather we could hope for and combined with the condition of the Golf Course ,wow, what a finish to a great year of golfing. During the month of September the three events were the visits to Riverside and Hampton and our own Estey Cup.

The visit to Riverside was well attended with a total of 44 from Westfield. It was a good golfing day and finished off with a nice lunch. With a large field and close scores the final tabulation of scores was completed sometime after we left.

The visit to Hampton had a smaller turnout with only 26 from Westfield. However we had another great day on a good golf course finished off with lunch and prizes. This completes all our events with the outside courses leaving only our Closing Scramble scheduled for October 5th.

Bob Plume won the Estey Cup this year with a Net score of 66. It was well attended with a field of 38 playing in great weather on a course in excellent condition. Congratulations Bob to you and all the other winners this summer.

Our last event, the Closing Scramble will be held on October 5th with a projected field of approximately 50 and hopefully a few more. It will be a 9:30 A.M. Shotgun start with a meal and prizes after. See you There!!!

he Niner’s Golf season began on May 10th at 8:00 a.m. with a golf breakfast, the speaker, was physiotherapist,  Sandy O’Brien. A second golf breakfast was held on June 14.  We were entertained by Joan Hurst, Joan Leggett, Donna Holland and Helen Kerr with an amusing portrayal of the Do’s and Don’ts of golf, and Marshall McMahon refreshed us on rules at a breakfast on July 12.

The Sussex Niner’s Invitational took place on August 5th.  The Westfield Niners were well represented with the greatest number of participants

The Mae Killam Field Day on August 16 was another great success. The reception before lunch was hosted by Marilyn Bradford on behalf of Mae Killam Saunder’s family. We were honored to have Mae Killam’s step daughter, Barb Wasson, represent the family at this function.

The Niner’s donated $440.00 to the Cancer Society in memory of Mae Killam. Charlene Hayes, Southern District Manager, of the New Brunswick Cancer Society, paid a personal visit to us on September 14th to thank us for this donation.
