WESTFIELD golf & country club 757-2250

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Judy Comeau

W

estfield is in fabulous shape. I hope all members are getting lots of opportunities to enjoy the plush fairways and greens. A big thank you to Helen Kerr and Sonja Taylor, our resident green thumbs, who are putting in many hours planning and planting the flowers and trees that are enhancing the beauty of our course.

The Board hopes to have a plan and costs for construction of our new maintenance shed ready for members’ approval by the end of July. We plan for construction to be completed by winter. The expansion of the pond at #4 must be completed this fall in order to fall under the window of approval from the Department of the environment. The mess on 17 will be repaired as soon as Mother Nature allows the equipment on the course.

Our tee booking system is working well and we continue to work out little bugs. Don’t forget to give guests names when booking a time.

Rumors are running rampant. Yes, the Board will be taking over all golf services and have all employees who provide golf services work directly for the club starting in 2007. This is part of our strategic plan’s governance section. Operating all golf services should provide the club with additional revenue that will assist us in running our operation in the black.

There will be no more private carts approved while the Board determines the best way to serve both the members and the club’s needs.

Alex is implementing a lot of ideas and little perks for ongoing events. Be sure to sign up for Thursday night dinners and bring some friends to our first Guys and Dolls (July 28th).

MANAGER’S NOTES by Alex Coffin

F

irst with the big news…… The 50/50 jug is back. Susan is primed to pick the winners. On the social side, the next Thursday night dinner on June 8 has spots still available. Light entertainment will be provided by the Martin Dixon Jazz Trio. The two seatings are at 5:30 and  7pm. Plans are in swing for the next Guys’n’Dolls as well. The tentative date is July 28. Musical and theme suggestions are welcome. There may be a small fee involved to cover for food and entertainment but it should be well worth the price. The fun would start at 5pm with a nine hole event involving certain club restrictions. All levels of membership are welcome but participants must be 19 years of age or older.

The first Sunday Night 9 Hole Money Match will be set for June 18. The competition list is closed for the first one but please sign up at the office if you are interested in a July event based on handicap. The rules are the following:

1)     $300 total is guaranteed for the top 2 total low score finishers with ties.

2)     If a player finishes 2 strokes off the best score on any hole, that player will be disqualified unless there is only one person with a lower score on that hole.

3)     #9 and #18 will be combined for a final hole par 5.

4)     All competitors tee off together.

5)     Prize money may be elevated through a 50/50 draw based on picking the winner.

If there is a tie for first after 9 holes, a playoff will take place using #1 and #9.

Confirmed competitors include Marshall McMahon, Jonathon Garron, Andrew Eisner, Troy Howe, Mark Francoeur, Bob Keeffe, Peter McCarthy, Sara McFadden, Scott Murray, Scott Reid, Don Roberts, Brett Taylor, and Scott Weatherhead.

Please keep the feedback coming. The new Little Swingers mini-camp is a direct result from member input. As an addition to the Marshall’s session on July 8, Cathleen and Jonathan are coordinating a 9am –noon mini-camp on July 13 and July 14. You can register your “under 10” child at the office. The feedback on the new Sussex Plan has also been very good. We only had 3 tee times taken by Sussex members in May. June now also includes a free tee time at Lakeside and a 50% discount at the Petitcodiac Valley and Bouctouche courses. Please remember that the tee times taken must be between Monday and Friday.

Have a great month of June and I’ll hopefully see a lot of you at the Peter Murray Field Day.

LADIES
ASSOCIATION

by Gay Wittrien

I

t was a warm, sunny day on May 13th  and  a record number of ladies gathered at the Westfield Golf and Country Club to  view all the latest Spring Fashions. Shades of blue, green and yellow were hi-lighted on the runway as our ladies modeled the latest in casual and dress apparel. We had a hard time keeping our compliments silent but we could not contain ourselves when Alice Cooper surprised us all with a flash visit. Dancing his way around the room he stopped to sign a few autographs.  Could it be true that there was a slight resemblance to our Phyllis Durant?

Our table centerpieces reflected the theme of our day’s event and we recognized Decor 8’s efforts. In all, Ladies, this was your show and you did an exceptional job! This was a major fundraiser and our expectations were exceeded! It was a great day to see old friends and it was a great day to make new acquaintances.

Our first Tuesday luncheon was held on May 23rd with over 40 ladies in attendance. It was nice to see everyone and we look forward to the next gathering on Tuesday, June 6th. I understand lobster is on the menu.

Golfing is what we like and we had plenty on Saturday. More than 40 ladies participated in our first Brunch and Scramble. The day was not all about golf but more about friendship and having just pure FUN!  We were pleased that our Club President Judy Comeau joined us for the morning.

Joan Hurst has been busy organizing the Tim Horton’s Ladies Invitational to be held on Wednesday, July 19th .  This is a large tournament and will require a number of volunteers, so don’t hesitate to offer your assistance.

Have you noticed that the garden beds are showing  their spring colours? Helen and Sonja have been busy and I know the gardens will be the talk of the town before long.

In closing, congratulations are in order. Not everyone has the experience of breaking 100, but our Shirley Myles and Starr Dashwood did just that a couple of weeks ago. Can 90 be next?

See you on the course!

ur three new tees have been rated and #3 will now be a par 4.  Our slope and rating have been changed to par 70.5 and 112. You might notice a slight increase in your handicap as the system adjusts to the new figures.

To be eligible for the team, you must have a 24.0 or higher factor on date of the qualifying round.  If you wish to qualify for the Rose Bowl team please indicate on sign-up sheet.

Find a partner and sign up for the Moosehead/Alpine Doubles Match Play, which will begin this month. Deadline for the sign up is June 7th. Match play will be played throughout the summer. There is no charge for this event.

Our Fashion Show was a great success with over 130 attending.  I would like to thank Sandra Frees of Sandra’s Fashions for a great job, and the many volunteers who have made this fundraiser possible.

The Provincials will be held this year from July 23 – 26 at Miramichi Golf Club.  Registration sheets and information are on the tournament bulletin board in the ladies locker room.  Register early to insure a spot.  You may register on line at www.golfnb.nb.ca

 NINER’S REPORT

by Sarah Wilson

T

he Niners officially started the 2006 Golf Season on Wednesday, May 10th at 8:00 a.m. with the first of our monthly golf breakfasts.  Physiotherapist, Sandy O’Brien, sparked our interest when she began her talk telling us that a golf swing involves some 400 muscles and numerous joints.  Sandy provided us with excellent injury prevention/reduction information, and exercises, that should, if we put them in practice, keep us swinging throughout the season.   Our next breakfast is scheduled on Wednesday, June 14, at 8:00 a.m.: The speaker will be our very own golf pro, Marshall McMahon.

I am pleased to report that the Niners have grown by a significant number over last year. A warm welcome to new members,  Pat Anglin, Jean Bennet, Betty Byrne, Florence Cosman, Judy Graham, Billie Harvey, Karen MacDonald, Ella MacMillan, Kathleen McLean, Mary Linn Stephenson, Marie Thorburn, Nancy Thorne, and Edie Wrench.

You will soon be seeing two new benches installed on the course, one at the Ladies Tee on Hole #1, and one at the Ladies Tee on Hole #4.  These are a gift from the 2005 Niners to the Club. The benches were purchased with the proceeds of the sale of the Niners Cook Book, and money earned through the weekly 50/50 Draws.

The Annual Niner’s Invitational is scheduled on July 5.  If anyone has any new ideas or suggestions that they would like to share for the planning of our annual Invitational, please don’t hesitate to share them with me or Nicole.  If you have a special interest or skill and would like to volunteer to either chair a committees, or work on one of the committees for the Invitational, please let me or Nicole know. We want everyone to be involved.  We will be looking for prizes, and gifts for the Booty Bags; if you can help in that way, let’s talk about it.

We discussed Pace of Play at the Breakfast on May 10. Following that idea being floated, another idea emerged… that new players,  and seasoned ones too, after ten strokes, instead of being frustrated and slowing down the pace of play, pick up their ball and place it on the edge of the Green, in back of the player who is furthest from the hole and take their putt from that position.

There may some confusion as to what privileges those who have joined the Club as “Wednesday Niners” enjoy.   You are entitled to all privileges of the Club, and to attend all events.  With regard to playing golf, if you paid dues as Wednesday Niner only, and   you want to play golf on any other day or time other than Wednesday mornings, you must pay green fees.

To ensure that your name is in the draw for Wednesday morning play, make it a habit to put your name on the Sign Up Sheet in the Ladies Locker Room for the following week before you leave the Club.

PRO SHOP NOTES by Jonathan Garron

W

ell we have made it through the first month of the season and what a great start we have had.  The weather has definitely cooperated with us so far and the golf course is in fabulous condition.

We have finally received some of our inventory, so please feel free to come into the proshop and check it out.

We are more then happy to help you with any questions or concerns you may have.

Putting is the most important aspect of the game. When standing over a putt remember to get comfortable and stay still. Focus on the back of the ball until after the ball is gone.

The golf course has never been in better condition so let’s take advantage of this and everyone have a great summer.

MATCH COMMITTEE by Barry Reid

T

hanks to Andrew King for his support of the Coors Light Get Acquainted Scramble won by the team of Scott Reid, Dave Stafford, our president Judy Comeau and Bob Lorie.  The next local tournament is the 1st Annual Peter Murray Field Day on Saturday June 17th in honour of a great sportsman who we lost last year.  This replaces the O’Brien Field day that was supported by the O’Brien family for 30 years!
Our Alpine and Moosehead Doubles matches begin this month. Please make every effort to get the matches completed on time. The results will be posted on the website.  The Saturday morning Hall & Fairweather/Pepsi Shoot-Out starts this month. Also, see Art Donaldson to get your hole-in-one insurance for $8.00.

A small suggestion when entering your scores on our handicap computers… Get someone to read them off while another enters the hole-by-hole scores.  It will go a lot faster this way.  Don’t forget. We have the ability to view our handicaps online from home.  But, scores must be entered on the club computers.  If you record a score on an away course that is not on our system, bring it to the office and we will add that course to our database so you can input that score.
