PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Judy Comeau

I |
ts August already! The golf god’s have been generous with over night rain and beautiful days. The weather combined with the hard work by Paul and his crew has Westfield in prime shape. Thanks to Helen Kerr and her committee for a highly successful Bud Light Mix, Joan Hurst and her committee for the most highly attended ladies tournament in the province. Thanks to Sarah Wilson and her committee for a wonderful Niner’s Invitational.
The flowers and esthetics of the club continue to impress members and guests alike. Thanks again to volunteers extraordinaire – Helen Kerr and Sonja Taylor.
Hopefully our course and fine weather will continue as we prepare for the Junior Invitational and the best men’s Tournament of the province the Molson Cup.
See you on the 13th at River Valley Middle School for the Special Meeting of Shareholders’ members.
MANAGER’S NOTES by Alex Coffin

uly was busy and finished with a bang.
Congratulations to Glen MacLean had two hole-in-ones on Sunday in the
same round on #6 and #15!! Marshall ensured that we got some great exposure with the
television stations.
Westfield could have used Glen going into the Sunday portion of the Presidents' Cup Challenge with Campobello but faced an extremely tough home team. Although we lost by 14 holes, it should be noted that Campobello has never lost in this format on their own turf and some of our best players were playing in a money match against Hampton. Don Roberts was the big winner of July's Money Match. Don played the 9 hole format in 3 under with Mike Breen of Hampton and Mark Francoeur tied for second. There were some heavy hitters in this game and every hole was intense. 5 players hit the showers early after the 1st hole!!
I’ll add to Judy’s congratulations to Donna Holland and Joan Hurst for a record turnout at the Women's Invitational! Congratulations as well to Helen Kerr for her hard work on the Bud Light Mixed Invitational, Judy Carpenter on the Diane Brennan, Sarah and Nicole on the Niner’s Invitational and to the organizers of the Stor-It Systems Tournament. Of course, our match captains Barry Reid and Donna Holland have been a constant with the tournaments which also included the Men’s Qualifying.
Unfortunately, the Guys and Dolls has been cancelled for August. We'll definitely do it again but the sign-up was too low to justify the cost involved. Work on #17 will hopefully resume soon when it's dry enough. Thank you for your patience!! Other items are being dealt with as best we can so keep the feedback coming.
Playing time was a little slower in July. Bag tags are being checked and Cathleen has assisted myself in doing course sweeps for slow play. Be sure to alert the pro shop, Marshall or myself if you feel that play is being unfairly slowed by a group. We are asking that any group backing up the course with free holes in front of them must take a break after 9 holes. This will be enforced when necessary and my cell # is 651-1136 if you want to keep that in your golf bag.
I have to admit that a lot of the above has been mentioned in my e-mail updates. Contact the office if you are not part of this update list but would like to be. This includes updates on our kitchen and special events such as the Thursday Night Dinners.
To finish, I want to extend my deep
gratitude to Lynn, Patricia and Paul who have all worked
hard and supervised a strong staff during an extremely busy time in the
office. I would also like to thank Alistair Barr from Welsford, Gerry Connolly
from Rockwood, Jim Connolly from Riverside, Duncan Mayberry from Hampton and
Jayne Ingalls from Sussex for their recent input on the issues regarding taking
over all golf course operations. Please allow me to address any concerns
that you may have in regards to this transition before casting your vote at the
August 13 Special Member's Meeting.

BEGINS AUGUST 1ST
LADIES
ASSOCIATION

ummer certainly
swung in this past month. Lots of sunshine and warm temperatures provided ample
golfing opportunities. I have heard lots of positive comments on the great
condition of the course and applaud Paul and his crew for all their hard
work.
Our ladies met with
success participating in tournaments not only here at Westfield, but also at a
number of other clubs in the Province. When winners were announced, our names
were there. We are so proud of how well our members Cindy, Maureen, Debbie and
Helen fared at the Ladies Provincial
Championships held in the Miramichi.
Judy Carpenter
organized the Diana Brenan Memorial Tournament held in early July. With a
record number of participants a fun day ended with Jane Madsen as the Trophy
winner. Socializing then became the name of the game.
The highlight of our
golfing season to date was the Tim
Horton’s Ladies Invitational held at Westfield on July 19th.
With a field of 105 golfers on one of the hottest days of the year Joan Hurst
and her committee did a wonderful job of ensuring a seamless event. Nancy
Steele, Twila Hitchock, Cindy Hutchinson, Elaine Buckley and Joan Irvine were
our top winners. A special mention goes to
Elaine Tilley, who aced the putting contest.
From all reports the
Niners also held a successful
tournament in July. The Westfield ladies are known for their hospitality and
coupled with the delicious luncheon; a good day was had by all. Favourable
comments are still coming in! There was
lots of laughter recently as themed “Tee Shirts” were paraded in front of a
panel of judges. The ladies’ creativity knew no limits.
Match Play continues
at the club and we are hearing of good games and of games that were not
quite up to par but as we all know
that’s GOLF! But whether we have good
games or not, the social opportunities know no bounds.
Helen Kerr once
again organized a very fun and successful Budlight
Mixed Tournament in July. As always, the day was filled with lots of
laughter and some interesting shots. Afterwards the 21 teams gathered to enjoy
a delicious meal and at the presentation of prizes our Peter and Debbie McHugh,
Sharon Woods and Perry McCullum and Helen McCullum and team partner Aaron
Thorne were in the winner’s circle.
Sandy Johnson,
Executive Director of Hospice Saint John, was guest speaker at our first Tuesday Luncheon in July. Sandy
familiarized the ladies with the services offered at the new Hospice House on
Douglas Avenue.
Our next Tuesday
Ladies Luncheon on August 15th
will include tomato juice,
glazed baked ham, garlic mashed potatoes, fresh baby carrots, biscuits and the
ever popular banana cream pie.
Westfield’s annual Christmas in July dinner was again a huge success. Strings of
lights, ornaments and candles dressed the tables giving the dining room quite a
festive feeling. The dining staff did a wonderful job of preparing a
traditional Christmas buffet.
In closing, I would like to take this
opportunity to thank ALL the members who help with various activities at Westfield.
These events would not happen without a lot of volunteer effort.
There is lots of
good golfing weather left, so chances are, I will see you on the course!
P.S: Congratulations to Margot Maber for breaking
100. Well done Margot !

t is hard to believe that July is already over. The month was full of great golfing weather and hopefully August will bring in the same. I would like to send out special congratulations to Corey Bourque, Neil and Patrick Roberts, and Maria and Hannah Jones. These juniors represented our club at the 2006 Junior Provincials. Great job goes out to all of you!
Reminders for the month of August: On Sunday, August 6th we will be having our annual Rocca Junior / Senior Scramble. This is one of the highlights of the summer. It is a fun tournament at which two juniors are paired up with two seniors and then scramble around the course for a fun day of golf. It costs $10.00 to sign up and there are prizes and dinner provided afterwards. Sign up sheets are located on the Junior Bulletin Board.
Junior Club Championships will be held on August 12th and 13th. There are different age categories for this and a 9-hole option is available for newer players. All juniors are encouraged to sign up on the Junior Bulletin Board. If for some reason you are unavailable to play on these days, please come see me and I will try my best to figure something out.
Our Junior Invitational will be held on Monday, August 14th. This is a tournament at which numerous juniors, from all around the province will come and take part in. With that said, because this will be Westfield’s Invitational, it would be awesome to see as many as you take part as possible. In order to be eligible to play, you must be a junior who has an 18-hole handicap. If interested, you must sign up in the office and pay a $20.00 fee.
The last day of our Junior Program will be on Wednesday, August 16th.
Our Closing Banquet will be held on the evening of August 21st at 6:30pm. The cost is $10.00 for adults and juniors, and $8.00 for children. The menu will be BBQ Chicken, Cord on the Cob, Baked Potato and a Dessert. Please call the office before Thursday, August 17th to reserve your place.
We will be having another Little Swingers Clinic on Saturday August 26th. This clinic will start at 9:30am and will be for children aged 10 and under. Please call the office to sign up.

e finally received a long awaited break
in the weather which allowed us to begin the needed work on Number 17. However
Mother Nature stepped in again with the rain last week causing us to stop and
wait until things dry out so the pond can be drained before continuing.
We are continuing to improve the cart paths on several of the fairways.
Our main efforts at this point are focused on the new path, which will take us
around the proposed enlarged pond on Number Four.
For those of you who have had the opportunity to play a round or two at some
of the other courses in the province, I am sure you will agree Paul and his
crew are doing a great job to keep our course in fantastic condition. The
greens are running true and the fairways remain lush and green.
Hopefully the months of August and September will offer some fine weather so
we can all continue to enjoy the course and this great game.

uring the month of July the Likely Hidden Partner event and our Fredericton outing were held and were well attended and considered very successful. Congratulations to the winners in both events. On the down side weather took over and our Hampton outing was postphoned until September 21st.
Coming up in the month of August we will be hosting Sussex and Fredericton on the 3rd and Hampton and Riverside on the 31st. Please sign up early for these events to avoid additional work at the last minute. I thank you in advance for your support.
Have a great month and remember, “ you’re probably not good enough to get mad at a bad shot “, most of us anyway.

ongratulations to Reg Williams and Peter McHugh for winning the annual Stor-It Systems Scramble/Alternate shot. Some of the teams that were happy on Saturday weren’t speaking to each other after Sunday! And they weren’t talking about the weather!!
Our 2006 Club Championship, Home Hardware and Senior Club Championship matches are well under way. As well, the Moosehead and Alpine doubles are moving along. Already a few upsets have occurred! Please make an effort to get these matches in. Be respectful for other teams in the competition.
Get all the scores of our local tournaments at our website: www.westfieldgolf.net. Stay tuned for our marquee tournament the 9th Annual Westfield Molson Cup to be played on August 19th and 20th. Come up and be part of some great action.
