PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Judy Comeau

T |
he Board has been
elected to run the club in the most cost efficient manner possible. The Board
is obligated to ensure that all services provided to members is first quality
and finally the Board is obligated to ensure that the course is kept in the
best possible shape for members to play.
In the past the Board has worked hard to improve the playability of the
course and it has developed a strategic plan in consultation with the members
to provide a template for addressing members concerns.
As the final step in governing by “policy governance”, the Board has
voted to bring golf services under the direct control of the club. This means
that all personnel serving the membership will become employees of Westfield.
This will include the pro, front shop and back shop which are presently not
Westfield employees. The reasons for moving in this direction at this time
include: the contract of our very personable professional expires in December
of 2006; the trend across the province and North America is for clubs to manage
all aspects of golf services and finally the Board feels it can provide better
service or correct problems more readily if all employees are part of the club.
To this end the present professional has been consulted and his input
has been given to the committee that is creating the job description, terms of
employment and financial package. This package when prepared will be given to
another committee (golf services manager selection committee) who will
advertise, short list, interview and recommend to the Board, the person they
feel can best provide the necessary services to members.
The Board decided to open the position to advertisement as the position
is new, the terms of employment will be different and the Board wants to ensure
that the members get the best person possible for that position. Our present
professional may be the ideal candidate but the Board still feels that the
process is necessary when filling a new position. This is an entirely different
job than being self-employed.
There has been some concern regarding the Board’s authority to pursue
this course, as the rumour is loose that the Board cannot set up the services
without seeking the members’ permission for capital purchases. There will be
few capital purchases as most items in question are leases and product – not
capital items. The Board has always
and will continue to consult the
membership for any capital purchases or capital changes to the course.
Please bear in mind that human resource issues are not issues that go
before the general membership. Those issues are personal and are to be resolved
by the general manager and the Board when necessary.
All Board members review issues and often table issues before voting,
remembering to set aside personal opinions and voting for what is best for
Westfield now and in the future.
It is important for members to ask Board members for clarification and
not spread unfounded rumours creating an unnecessary climate that is
unwelcoming at the club.
On another matter, the Board is preparing a financial plan for a
maintenance barn, cart paths (in conjunction with the plan), storage sheds as
well as at least one new green. Once the plan is in place, these capital
expenses will be brought before the membership for approval. The Board’s intent
is that the payment schedule can be covered within the assessment now being
paid by the membership.

he weather was poor in June but the forecast is looking very good for
July. However, expect a wintery mood for July 13 with our Christmas
in July dinner. This will be my first time so I look forward to being there
with Santa Claus!! Art exhibited for our Thursday Night Dinners will feature
the trio of Margo Maber, Ruth Sullivan & Sarah Wilson on July 13 and
Loretta Hill and Norma Ross on July 27. The music has not been confirmed for
the next Guys’n’Dolls on August 5 yet and we are considering an evening
barbecue to accommodate any Masters participants staying late so please contact
myself for any suggestions.
Feedback is also being looked for in
regards to our new booking system. If you have not seen our new survey, please
ask for one at the office. On the course, there has been a renewed focus on
addressing etiquette so please report any dangerous or destructive behaviour to
myself and I will address those involved. I do want to commend Cathleen O’Leary
for her hard work in ensuring a brisk pace of play and respect for our course
rules
amongst
our juniors. I would also like to commend Sarah Wilson and Nicole Haynes for
their hard work with such a big Wednesday morning group and Nancy Steele and
Karen Walsh for taking steps towards organizing the Tuesday night group.
The next money match is scheduled for July 30 at 3pm. For a
reminder, it is a 9-hole contest and the rules are that you are disqualified on
any hole if you are 2 shots behind the best score on that hole. Four Hampton
members are being invited and new golfers may include Marshall McMahon, Dave
Allen, Bill Cameron, Alex Cunningham, John Fitzpatrick, Dave Kean and Scott
Murray. Bob Keeffe is unable to play on that date. Confirmed players already include
recent low men’s qualifier Scott Reid and former Canadian Tour member Brett
Taylor. The 50/50 prize is a minimum of $300 based on picking the winner. The
last one worked very well with Scott Weatherhead, Mark Francoeur, Pat
Allen and Brett Bodechon all finishing the 9 holes with Scott winning the low
gross score. Paul Pitt took home the 50/50 pot.
Congratulations to all members who have been representing the
golf course recently at competitive events including Peter McCarthy at the
recent Canadian Club Champions Championship. It was also very
nice to see Marshall McMahon recognized as the new captain of the southern team
at the Estabrooks Cup. Art Gregg wanted me to add that John Estabrooks got his
start here at Westfield. The Estabrooks owned the house
just
below the club on Golf Club Drive - opposite Susan (Farrer) Irving house.
On a sad note, long-time waitress Linda Sheils is presently in the
hospital. Kitchen staff has been in close contact and members can give her a
card by leaving one at the office. We all wish for a healthy recovery and hope
to see her again soon.

BEGINS AUGUST 1ST
LADIES
ASSOCIATION

ummer is here and we are anxiously waiting for the end
to all this rain. Despite the weather Match Play continues and speaking of
Match Play, our Match Captain, Donna Holland has indicated that after five
years it is time for someone else to take over the reigns. We are delighted
that Elaine Elkin has moved into the position of Assistant Captain until next fall
when she will take over the job of Match Captain. We will acknowledge Donna’s
huge contribution at our Annual Meeting in September.
The Tuesday Night Ladies have been rudderless these
past two months but Nancy Steele and Karen Walsh have volunteered to organize
activities for this small group of ladies to make sure they have a positive
golfing experience.
Mary Riley celebrated her birthday at our June 6th
Ladies Association Tuesday Luncheon. These gatherings continue to be popular
and we welcome all to join us at our next luncheon on Tuesday, July 4th.
The Thursday Night Dinners are an important part of
our social calendar at the club and it is gratifying to see members supporting
these nights. Our Club Manager Alex has added new features that have captured
everyone’s attention.
Joan Hurst is organizing our Tim Horton’s
Invitational to be held on Wednesday, July 19th. Just a reminder that donations of items for
our raffle table are still being welcomed. You may be asked to volunteer!
After this month, it will be time to give serious
thought to our Executive and Committee positions for 2007. Several members will not be seeking
re-election. Cindy Hutchinson is Chair of the Nominating Committee so give some
thought to putting your name forward.
On a lighter note I understand that Twila Hitchcock
and Donna were caught out on the course during a thunder and lightning storm a
couple of weeks ago. They huddled in Donna’s cart in the hut on number two all
by themselves. The lightning strike
nearby didn’t add to their comfort. They saw first hand the effects of the
power of nature. The only assurance they had were the rubber tires on the cart.
I bet they will be the first ones off the course the next time they hear rumbles
in the distance.
We continue to enjoy all the colours of the
flowerbeds, the hanging baskets and the flower boxes. Coupled with the
fragrances of the spring flowers and the activity at the birdhouses we have
been treated to nature’s treasures - thanks to the continued dedication of
Helen and Sonja.
In closing, we extend a very warm welcome to new
members Terri Frank, Mabel Mouland, Pat McGarity, Bonny Dixon, Joanne
MacMillan, Maureen O’Neill, Sara Jayne Cameron and Rose Bradshaw.
See you on the golf course!

Matches are underway for the Mosher
Trophy and Moosehead/Alpine Doubles. Please play your matches promptly. Check out the match results on our web site. www.westfieldgolf.net

as prizes have to be purchased. Judy Carpenter will be organizing this event.
Sign-up sheets are in the locker room. This is a fun tournament with lots of
prizes and lots of food!
Just a reminder to sign-up for the Bud Light Mixed Invitational, which
will be held on July 9th. Helen Kerr is again organizing this tournament.
The Tim Hortons Westfield Ladies Invitational is on July 19th. The closing
date for the registration is June 15th. Please register at the office. Joan

to bring in your donations for the raffle table.
Just a reminder to put your up-to-date handicap on your scorecard
before turning it in.
NINER’S REPORT
by Sarah Wilson

espite the soggy Wednesdays, the Niners
have been enjoying this 2006 Golf Season.
As reported in the May newsletter, our season had a great opening
breakfast to welcome back seasoned Niners and twenty new Niners. Our speaker, Sandy O’Brien, Physiotherapist,
Sports Medicine Clinic gave us some good tips that will, if practiced, enable
us to avoid things like rotor cup injuries, back sprain, tennis elbow and many
of the other golfer’s complaints.
We held a second golf breakfast, combined with Fun Tee Shirt Day on
June 14. I was personally amazed at the
creativity of the all of the Niners who participated. For Niners who do not take advantage of the Golf Breakfasts, let
me tell you, you are missing a lot of fun and good information. On behalf of the Niners, I want to say thank
you to Joan Hurst, and her fine group of thespians, (Joan Leggett, Donna
Holland, and Helen Kerr) for the skit they performed. Congratulations ladies,
thank you for sharing your talents with us.
The Breakfast concluded with the award of prizes for the FUN TEE Shirt
Day – First prize was awarded to Linda Aiton, and second prizes were awarded to
Olive Estabrooks, Marg Coulpier, Pat Anglin, Helen Strachen, Karen MacDonald,
Phil Durant, alias, Alice Cooper, Star Dashwood, and Margot Maber.
Marshall McMahon, always on hand to lend a hand, followed Joan and
Company. Thank you Marshall once again
for taking the time to reinforce the rules and etiquette of the game, and for
giving us ideas on how we can polish our performance.
The Niners Invitational is scheduled for July 5. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to
head up a committee, donate prizes, and contribute muffins, fruit, and elbow
grease to assist with this event. If
you are interested in helping in any way, and have not made that known, call
me; we can always use extra help.
In closing…The Golfer’s Prayer by Nicole Haynes… “I hope I live long
enough to shoot my age.”
Sarah Wilson,
Niners Match

earth, being the source of heat and light. The radiant energy, especially heat
and visible light, emitted by the sun. Sunshine
If any knows what the above status or how to
go about getting some let the Pro Shop know. Last years May has turned into
this years June. With that said the year so far has been a success. The course
is in the best shape it’s ever been.
I’d like to commend all our members who
played in the New Brunswick Fourball and a big congrats goes to Corey Bourque
and Alex Cunningham as they nearly captured the title, losing it on a three
hole playoff. Another round of applause goes to Sid Powell and Art Morris for
winning the net side at the NB Fourball Championship, also a playoff.
That’s all for now, pray for sun and see you
on the course.

ts great to see everyone back on the course. We have an awesome group
of kids in the junior program this year and a large number of beginners. These
kids are our future competitors here at Westfield and let me tell all of you,
the future looks fantastic! The weather forced us to cancel some of the June
lessons but there is still plenty of time and lots to learn over the next
couple of months. Remember- Field Days are on Mondays (must be signed up to
play), Lessons are on Tuesdays and Skill Development Clinics are on Wednesdays.
Another thing to remember is that all new juniors are to play from the junior
tees. This will help speed things up. I will be giving Bingo another try this
summer. The first Bingo night will be held on Monday, July 10th at
6:30PM in the lounge of the golf club. All juniors and their families and
friends are invited. Also, if anyone has children who are not part of the
junior program but may still enjoy playing Bingo, please feel free to drop by. Each game will cost .25 cents/card. Half of each games proceeds will go
directly into the Junior Program and the other half will go to the lucky
winners. We are looking for players, and if anyone is interested in
volunteering their time by either calling out the Bingo numbers or by
collecting money, that would also be great!
It’s a lot of fun and I hope to see a big crowd!!J
Last note is in regards to our Little Swingers program for children
under 10. There is a free session on July 8 with registration through the pro
shop. An addition this year is a 2 day camp on July 13 and July 14 that costs
$20 per child or $40 per family. The timing of the camp is a 9am dropoff with
pickup at noon. Activities include frisbee, soccer and bingo after a morning
golf skill lesson. Registration for the camp is through Alex or Susan in the
office.

hat looked like the best start we had in years certainly has been a
wash! But even with all the rain, the course is still in remarkably good shape
thanks to the efforts of our Greens Crew. We have been busy talking and making
changes in preparation for the alterations to the pond on number four and
perhaps number seventeen in the fall.
We have possibly found a good site for the Maintenance Shed, which will
allow for future changes to course. This location would be adjacent to our
present site.
We have agreed on a new lease for our machinery. This will give some of
our older machines a needed rest and some new machines, which will mean more
improvements to our course.
As you have probably noticed, we have been trying different flags
colours and tee block placements, in attempting to come up with a solution,
which would be comfortable to everyone. We will have our Club emblem put on the
flags once we have decided on the colours which best suit our course.
Once again our thanks go out to Helen Kerr and Sonja Taylor for their
continued efforts to beautify our course. The results of their green thumbs can
be seen in the improvements to hole number two. Thanks Ladies!
Also, I would like to extend sincere thanks to Alex Coffin, our new
Club Manager, who has bent over backwards to have the improvements to our
course go forward. He is certainly proving to be an asset to our Club.
We have numerous projects on our books, which we will tackle when we
have the time and the financial resources.
Hopefully the weather will change so we can all enjoy the conditions we
have on the course and give you the faster and truer greens you deserve.

uring the month
of June we had our opening scramble which was very well attended and enjoyed by
all. The Hampton and Riverside at Westfield event was
cancelled due to wet grounds and ugly weather. This event has been rescheduled
to August 31st.
Coming up in the month of July we will be in Hampton on July 13th
and in Fredericton the following week on July 20th. The cost for
each one of these is $25.00 and you can sign up in the office.
There will be sign up sheets in the locker room for each regular
Thursday. This is a great time to schedule your matches so just sign up and let
me know you want to play your match.
Have a great month and enjoy the Golf!
