PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Judy Comeau
|
I |
t is hard to believe that September is upon us and that our Juniors have completed their program, had their banquet and hopefully have improved their golf. Many thanks for a job well done to Cathleen, Marshall and Jon. The addition of the “Little Swingers” program was a big hit and hopefully has created more future members.
Barry Reid and his Match committee have certainly outdone themselves this year with the quality of our club tournaments and the Cadillac of provincial tournaments “the Molson Cup”.
Barry is another of the club’s “unsung heroes” Barry has taught himself web page design and single handedly has created and updates Westfield’s web page. He has taught Donna Holland, Cathleen and Helen Kerr (to name a few) the ins and outs of using the computer for draws, creating results and posting results. Across the province we get positive comments regarding the web page and all of our invitational tournaments. To all members who work hard to present Westfield’s best “foot” – a big thank you.
The Board has planned a special meeting for September. The expansion of the pond at #4 must be completed this fall in order to fall under the window of approval from the Department of the Environment. Karen Holyoke (our treasurer) and Alex are busy preparing the numbers along with Merrill, Paul and Sean Cashin. The project cannot be completed without membership approval.

s mentioned by Judy, I look forward to the September presentation on the expansion of the #4 pond. Paul and his crew also recently finished the work needed on the #11 tee. I thank everyone for their patience with the work on #17. I expect this to be completed shortly.
Fall time changes are coming quick. Effective September 5, starting tee
times will be 7:30am. Effective September 18, tee times will change to 8am. The
beverage cart is on reduced hours as of September 5 and
then reverts to weekends only after the 10th. A big thank you goes
to Katie & Devon for their hard work on the course this year and to
Cathleen & Gina for covering. The kitchen staff will once again prepare a
brown bag for anyone needing a lunch on the course.
Our Thursday Night Dinners will showcase artwork from Guila Inch & Jeanine Wilcox on September 14 and Margaret Graham & Joanne Lowerison on September 28. After dinner, entertainment will once again be offered.
I’ll see everyone as a competitor at the Jim Fox/ Shot Deakin Mixed Championship. Sonja and I have been seeded as early favourites. Good luck to everyone taking part in the Chris Spencer on September 3, the Master’s Final on September 9, the Mixed on September 17 and the Hole in One Scramble on September 24.
Now that the busy season has drawn to a close, I welcome more feedback
on playing time during July and August. This will help in terms of planning for
next year. My e-mail is wgccmgr@nb.aibn.com
and the club phone number is 757-2250.

NINER’S REPORT
by Sarah Wilson

olfing with the “Westfield Niner’s is an AWESOME enviable experience”…a quote from a new member who prefers to remain anonymous. This opinion is repeated with regularity at our Wednesday luncheons. What more could anyone ask for: Great Golf, Great Weather, Great Golfing Partners, Delicious Lunches, and Great Conversation?
With July and August behind us, we look forward to the warm sunshine
and great golfing that September usually brings.
Niners had a busy August, participating in the Super Six, the Sussex
Invitational and the Mae Killam Field Day.
With so many new members in our group, this was a first time experience
for many Niners. Congratulations to
everyone who participated in the Super Six, and a special congratulations to
Nicole Haynes and Carol Maber who won low gross in Division I.
The Sussex Niner’s Invitational took place on August 5th. The Westfield Niners were well represented
with the greatest number of participants. Congratulations to Carol Maber, who
took Low Gross, Longest Drive, Chip-Ins and Low Putts: Congratulation to Nicole
Haynes who received the award for “Low Net.”
Carol had the “longest
drive” at all three of the Niner’s Tournaments. Great golfing Carol.
The Mae Killam Field Day on August 16 was another great success. We
were honored to have Mae Killam’s step daughter represent the family. A note of appreciation was sent to Marilyn
Bradford, Mae (Killam) Saunder’s daughter who hosted our reception.
The Mae Killam Fieild Day is a “Low Net” competition. The winner will be announced at the Closing
Banquet on Monday, September 25th.
Match play is down to the final competition between Marilyn Evans and
Jane Craig.
Another Niners Golf Breakfast is scheduled on Wednesday, August 30th.
On behalf of Nicole and myself, I want to thank everyone for the
wonderful experiences we have had over the two years we served as your Match
Captains. It has been a learning experience for both of us, and we have
benefited from the experience both personally and professionally. We always
felt we had the full support of each and every one of the Niners in all our
efforts, and benefited greatly from the wisdom and excellent advice we received
from previous Match Captains, Jane Madsen, Marg Coulpier and Sandra
Franey. I also want to thank Donna
Holland for her help, she was a great source of information, and always ready
to help.
The Welsford Invitational will be coordinated by the new Match
Captains, at a date to be announced.

he summer sure did fly by. I am finishing up my third year as the junior coordinator here at Westfield and these past three summers have been awesome. We had a great group of juniors this year and I would like to wish all of you success in the upcoming school year. I will also be heading back to school this fall, pursing a degree in Education. With that said, it is highly likely that this will be my last year here at Westfield. While I truly enjoyed my time here, I feel that it is just about time for me to move on. I would like to thank everyone, juniors, their parents and our staff here at Westfield for making the last several years such an amazing experience for me. I wish everyone the best!
I would also like to congratulate our 2006 Junior Club Champions, as
well as the junior who won the Richard Evans Good
Sportsmanship Award and the Junior of the Year. These juniors were already
presented awards at our closing banquet but with that said, I feel that it is
important that everyone know whom these individuals are.

cannot believe
the summer is almost over again. It seems to go faster
every year. We have tried to give you the best conditions we could while
still maintaining the course. We aerated last week and I will bet most of
you did not even notice. The process we are using is dramatically
different from the time you used to see us racking the cores off the greens. You
will notice we have started changing the Number 11 tee. First we will be
leveling the higher tee and preparing it for play. We will then bring the
old tee to join the newly prepared one. Hopefully if we acquire approval to
enlarge the pond on Number 4, we will ask for your patience in regards to the
temporary tee. We will be building a new forward tee as well as preparing
the site for the new building and perhaps making other changes on the course
while the materials are available.
On a different note, I will be posting sheets for you to sign up to help with
the installation of the winter tarps. It is a labour intensive job and at
that time we have a skeletal crew. Last year you came through
allowing us to cover eleven greens in only two days. Once again, I
am asking for your help even if you can only give us an hour or two. I cannot
give you a date because it is dependent on the weather. People will be
called at that time.
We will soon be doing the budget for next year. If you have any suggestions
as to course improvements please speak to me or any member of the Green's
Committee. On a final note, please remember to repair your divot along with one
other in order to maintain your golf course.

veryone, welcome to fall! As hard as it is to admit fall is here to stay. Days are shorter and the mornings colder.
I’d like to congratulate Jon on tying the course record by shooting 62! Also Brett on turning pro a few weeks back.
Congratulations to Sara McFadden for winning the Ladies Club Championship, Dave Kean for winning the Senior Men’s Championship, Neil Roberts for winning the Boy’s Junior Club Championship and Westfield Junior Invitational and Meaghan Higgins for the Girl’s Junior Club Championship.
The summer is winding down but there is
still a lot of golf left. So hope to see you up here.

t may be hard to believe but here we are nearing the end of August which a few weeks ago seemed so far away. However during the month we had some great golfing weather and I know most of us took full advantage of this. Two Senior events were held during the month and great weather prevailed for both with one more scheduled for Thursday, August 31st.
On August 3rd Westfield were the host club for Fredericton
and Sussex, and with a total field of 96, things went very well and all enjoyed
a great golf day along with a great meal supplied by the Westfield kitchen
staff. To make these events successful a thank you goes out to Marshall and his
crew, Paul and his crew and all the support I receive from, in particular Susan
in the office and the rest of the Senior support people.
On August 17th Westfield and Fredericton visited Sussex with
a total field of approx. 70 where things went very well. It turned out to be a
great day weather wise, however a few of us found out why some of the Junior
scores were a little high, tough rough and greens. Having said that we had a
great day with a very good meal afterwards and overall a great outing.
On August 31st we are hosting Hampton and Riverside with an
expected field of approx. 125 and good weather is being forecast. I will have a
few words on this one next month.
Coming up in September we will visit Riverside on September 5th
and Hampton on September 21st so remember these dates.
That’s it for know – Great

nother great Westfield Molson Canadian Cup. A maximum field of 208 golfers participated in two days of superb play. The team of Mel Murray and Scott McNabb from Fredericton won the event with a 61 in the Scramble portion and two under 67 on day 2 in the modified alternate shot format. The Bobby Barr award for low net was won by the team of our own Wayne Sprague and Rockwood Park’s Richard Harris. Well done guys! 2nd time this team has won. It also features a hole-in-one by Wayne Buchanan from Gage on #6.
A big thanks to Molson and our many other sponsors, Paul Marr and his crew, Marshall and his staff, the kitchen staff and the volunteers. It takes a big effort to make this happen. Again this year, we were able to donate $1,000 to our Junior program.
Lastly,
Our next club tournament is the Spencer Field day on Sunday September 3rd. This weekend also features the semi final and final of the Club Championship on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Good luck to the 4 participants
